Rep. Ed Royce | Today, the U.S. Department of State released its 2008 Human Rights Report. The section on Vietnam detailed the wide range of human rights abuses that remain endemic across the country. Of particular concern, Vietnam continues to deny its citizens the right to assemble freely, as well as freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

Vietnam Review | The Socialist Republic of Vietnam, with a population of approximately 86 million, is an authoritarian state ruled by the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV). The most recent National Assembly elections, held in May 2007, were neither free nor fair, since all candidates were vetted by the CPV’s Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF), an umbrella group that monitored the country’s mass organizations. Civilian authorities generally maintained effective control of the security forces.
