Phero Nguyen Dinh Cuong

Phero Nguyen Dinh Cuong is a 31 year-old social activist. He is an active member of the Yen Dai congregation of Vinh-diocese and the John Paul II Group for Pro-Life.

Phero Nguyen Dinh Cuong was kidnapped on December 24, 2011 in Nghe An, Vinh Province and later charged with Article 79.

At 4:15 pm on December 24, 2011, Phere Nguyen Dinh Cuong was at his friend’s home when three plain-clothes officers barged into the home, handcuffed Phere Nguyen Dinh Cuong and whisked him away in a taxi. Phero Nguyen Dinh Cuong’s younger brother chased down the taxi to ask for explanation of his brother’s arrest but was beaten by the three officers. Witnesses reported seeing the taxi drove to the police detention center.

On December 28, 2011, four days later after his kidnapped, Phero Nguyen Dinh Cuong’s family received an official letter from Ministry of Public Security charging Cuong with Article 79, attempting to overthrow the government. Phero Nguyen Dinh Cuong’s mother vehemently rejected the charges and stated, “Outside of work, my son has been involved in charity and social work. How is this overthrowing the government?”

He is currently being detained and held at B14 Detention Center in Hanoi without trail.
